ALERT – ARMY WORMS
The season is fast approaching for army worms to invade area lawns. They show up and do their damage in late summer through fall. Seagreen Lawn Care wants you to be aware of the devastating damage that army worms can do. They can turn your lawn brown in 24 hours. We offer a preventive insecticide treatment to avert these destructive army worm attacks.
Army worms are a type of immature moth species that are sporadic but a serious pest of turfgrasses. Bermuda grass is the army worm’s first choice along with Saint Augustine and Zoysia lawns. However, they will attack ALL warm-season and cool-season lawns. Lawns adjacent to golf courses are especially susceptible because golf courses always treat their fairways to prevent army worm damage which then pushes the insects outward toward residential properties. Newly installed sod is especially susceptible to damage from the insect.
Army worms are approximately 1-1½ inches long and can vary in color from a green to mottled brown or black. They will feed day or night but are usually most active early in the morning or late in the evening.
One female moth can lay as many as 1,000 eggs which hatch within 2-10 days, and within two weeks, a new population of moths emerge. Several generations occur each year in North and South Carolina. Early infestations tend to occur following a mild winter. They overwinter in Florida and the Gulf states and often appear after tropical storms or prevailing winds from the south.
Signs of Fall Army Worms:
- Small, white/grey moths flying up from the grass while walking or mowing.
- Birds feeding in your lawn.
- Wasp-like insects feeding in your lawn.
- Brown grass that will not turn green with watering.
- Lawns that turn brown overnight.
Insecticides to control Fall Army Worms are different than insecticide products used for other surface insects. Fall Army Worm control requires a different product – it is NOT the same as mole cricket control.
Seagreen uses an Army Worm control product that is liquid and does not need to be watered in. The product will provide season-long control. Seagreen can apply the product during our round 4 and 5 applications.
